London/Ottawa, October 21, 2025 – As Sikhs worldwide celebrated Bandi Chhor Divas, marking the historic release of Guru Hargobind Ji from Gwalior Fort, prominent world leaders joined in extending heartfelt greetings, emphasizing the festival’s themes of freedom, justice, and compassion.
Among them, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney issued special messages, highlighting their nations’ strong ties with the Sikh community.UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer took to X on October 20, 2025, to share his festive greetings: “To Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs across Britain, I wish a happy and peaceful Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas.
Earlier this month, I lit a diya in Mumbai, symbolizing devotion, joy, and new bonds. Let’s use this festival to build a Britain where everyone can look forward with hope.” Starmer’s message, referencing his recent India visit, underscored the UK’s vibrant Sikh population of approximately 500,000 and his commitment to cultural diversity as Labour Party leader.
Across the Atlantic, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a formal statement on October 21, celebrating the occasion with Canada’s nearly 800,000-strong Sikh community.
“Today, Canadians and Sikhs worldwide mark Bandi Chhor Divas, a festival of freedom, selflessness, and justice, honoring Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji’s release,” Carney said. “In a rapidly changing world, this day unites families to reflect on service, faith, and generosity. On behalf of Canada, I wish everyone joy and a Happy Bandi Chhor Divas.”
Carney also shared a bilingual message on X, reinforcing Canada’s deep connection with its Sikh diaspora and his ongoing engagement with community leaders.
