Chandigarh, October 23, 2025: In a major crackdown on digital misinformation, Punjab Police have issued notices to tech giants Facebook and Google (including YouTube) in connection with a fake video case targeting Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The move comes after a series of manipulated videos surfaced online, aimed at defaming the CM.
The videos, allegedly created by Jagman Samra, a Sangrur native residing in British Columbia, Canada, were made using advanced AI-based deepfake technology and LED tools. Authorities have identified seven such videos, two of which were uploaded on Samra’s social media accounts with provocative captions, including one claiming, “This is just a trailer. Prove it’s AI, and win 1 million dollars.”
The posts, uploaded 14 and 9 hours ago, rapidly gained traction from overseas.Punjab Police have registered an FIR against Samra under multiple sections of the Information Technology Act for spreading fake news and creating deepfakes. Notices to Facebook and Google demand the immediate removal of the videos and details about the uploader’s accounts to assist the investigation. With Samra based abroad, officials are exploring international legal avenues to pursue the case.
“This is a serious attempt to malign the Chief Minister’s image and could have wider implications for public trust and security,” a senior police official stated. The incident has sparked concerns over the rising misuse of deepfake technology, prompting calls for stricter regulations.
