Jalandhar: Youth Dies During Police Operation, Family Alleges Encounter Was Unjustified
A 22-year-old youth, Lovepreet Singh Lambi, a resident of Bangiwal village in Jalandhar district, died after being shot during a police operation late Friday night.
According to police officials, a team from Mehatpur Police Station had gone to arrest Lovepreet in connection with an attempted murder case. Police claimed that the accused was asked to surrender, but the situation turned tense when family members allegedly attacked the police team. Officers stated that a gunman attached to the SHO fired in self-defence, injuring Lovepreet.
The injured youth was taken to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
However, the family has strongly disputed the police version. They alleged that Lovepreet was bathing at home when police arrived. According to them, as he came out of the house, he was shot from behind by the SHO’s gunman. Family members claim the bullet struck his back and have demanded that a murder case be registered against the police personnel involved.
The incident has sparked anger in the village, with residents demanding an impartial investigation.
Jalandhar Rural SSP Harvinder Singh Virk stated that several criminal cases had previously been registered against Lovepreet and some of his family members. He maintained that the police team came under attack during the arrest operation and that the firing occurred in self-defence.

ਜਲੰਧਰ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਬਾਂਗੀਵਾਲ ਦੇ 22 ਸਾਲਾ ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਲਵਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਲੰਬੀ ਦੀ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਗੋਲੀ ਲੱਗਣ ਨਾਲ ਮੌਤ ਹੋ ਗਈ।
ਪੁਲਿਸ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ ਮਹਿਤਪੁਰ ਥਾਣੇ ਦੀ ਟੀਮ ਲਵਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨੂੰ ਕਤਲ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਗ੍ਰਿਫ਼ਤਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਪਹੁੰਚੀ ਸੀ। ਪੁਲਿਸ ਦਾ ਦਾਅਵਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਗ੍ਰਿਫ਼ਤਾਰੀ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਕ ਮੈਂਬਰਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਟੀਮ ‘ਤੇ ਹਮਲਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ, ਜਿਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਐੱਸ.ਐੱਚ.ਓ. ਦੇ ਗੰਨਮੈਨ ਨੇ ਸਵੈ-ਰੱਖਿਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੋਲੀ ਚਲਾਈ। ਗੋਲੀ ਲੱਗਣ ਨਾਲ ਲਵਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਜ਼ਖ਼ਮੀ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਸਪਤਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਹੋ ਗਈ।
ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨੇ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਦੇ ਦਾਅਵਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਕਾਰਦਿਆਂ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਦੋਸ਼ ਲਗਾਏ ਹਨ। ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦਾ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਦੋਂ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਘਰ ਪਹੁੰਚੀ, ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਲਵਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨਹਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਬਾਹਰ ਆਇਆ ਤਾਂ ਸਿਵਲ ਕੱਪੜਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਐੱਸ.ਐੱਚ.ਓ. ਦੇ ਗੰਨਮੈਨ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਿੱਠ ਪਿੱਛੋਂ ਗੋਲੀ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ।
ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਘਟਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਗੈਰ-ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ ਕਰਾਰ ਦਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਸੰਬੰਧਿਤ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਮੁਲਾਜ਼ਮਾਂ ਖ਼ਿਲਾਫ਼ ਕਤਲ ਦਾ ਮਾਮਲਾ ਦਰਜ ਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਰਪੱਖ ਜਾਂਚ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ।
ਘਟਨਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੋਸ ਦਾ ਮਾਹੌਲ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਲੋਕ ਇਨਸਾਫ਼ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
ਐੱਸ.ਐੱਸ.ਪੀ. ਹਰਵਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਵਿਰਕ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਲਵਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਖ਼ਿਲਾਫ਼ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਵੀ ਕਈ ਅਪਰਾਧਿਕ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਦਰਜ ਸਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ ਗ੍ਰਿਫ਼ਤਾਰੀ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਟੀਮ ‘ਤੇ ਹਮਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ, ਜਿਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਸਵੈ-ਰੱਖਿਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੋਲੀ ਚਲਾਈ ਗਈ।
ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਦੀ ਜਾਂਚ ਆਈ.ਪੀ.ਐੱਸ. ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀ ਵਿਨੀਤ ਅਹਿਲਾਵਤ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ।
