2011 ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਕੱਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੀ ਜਿੱਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਹਿਮ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਨਿਭਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਯੁਵਰਾਜ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਹਾਲ ਹੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਇੰਟਰਵਿਊ (ਸਾਨੀਆ ਮਿਰਜ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਪੌਡਕਾਸਟ ‘ਤੇ) ਵਿੱਚ ਅੰਤਰਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਕਟ ਤੋਂ ਜੂਨ 2019 ਵਿੱਚ ਸੰਨਿਆਸ ਲੈਣ ਦੇ ਅਸਲ ਕਾਰਨਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਗੱਲ ਕੀਤੀ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਖਰੀ ਵਾਰ 30 ਜੂਨ 2017 ਨੂੰ ਵੈਸਟ ਇੰਡੀਜ਼ ਖਿਲਾਫ਼ ਭਾਰਤ ਲਈ ਖੇਡਿਆ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ 2019 ਓਡੀਆਈ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਕੱਪ ਟੀਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਾ ਚੁਣੇ ਜਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਅੰਤਰਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਕਟ ਅਤੇ ਆਈਪੀਐੱਲ ਤੋਂ ਵੀ ਅਲਵਿਦਾ ਕਹਿ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ: “ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਖੇਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਜ਼ਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਮੈਨੂੰ ਲੱਗ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਜ਼ਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਤਾਂ ਕ੍ਰਿਕਟ ਕਿਉਂ ਖੇਡ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ? ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਹਿਯੋਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਮੈਨੂੰ ਲੱਗਿਆ ਕਿ ਜਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕਿਉਂ ਕਰਨਾ? ਖੇਡ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਕੁਝ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਜੋ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਜ਼ਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇ ਰਿਹਾ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਕਿਉਂ ਜੁੜੇ ਰਹਾਂ? ਸਾਬਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਕੀ ਬਚਿਆ ਹੈ? ਮੈਂ ਮਾਨਸਿਕ ਅਤੇ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦੁਖੀ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ।” ਕੈਂਸਰ ਨਾਲ ਜੰਗ ਜਿੱਤਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਵੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਭਾ ‘ਤੇ ਸ਼ੱਕ ਅਤੇ ਸਹਿਯੋਗ ਦੀ ਘਾਟ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁੱਖ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਸੰਨਿਆਸ ਲੈਣ ਨਾਲ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਨਸਿਕ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਮਿਲੀ। ਇਹ ਖੁਲਾਸਾ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਰੀਅਰ ਦੇ ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੱਡੇ ਖਿਡਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਭਾਵਨਾਤਮਕ ਚੁਣੌਤੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਜਾਗਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Yuvraj Singh, the hero of India’s 2007 T20 and 2011 ODI World Cup triumphs, recently opened up in an interview (with Sania Mirza on her podcast) about the real reasons behind his retirement from international cricket and the IPL in June 2019. The former all-rounder, who last played for India on June 30, 2017, against West Indies, was left out of the 2019 ODI World Cup squad, which became a turning point. He admitted: “I was not enjoying my game. I had a feeling that why am I playing cricket when I’m not enjoying it? I was not feeling supported. I was not feeling respected. And I felt, why do I need to do this when I don’t have this? The game has given me so much, and I’ve given my best. Why am I lingering on to something that I’m not enjoying? Why do I need to play? To prove what? I can’t do more than this, mentally or physically, and it was hurting me.” Yuvraj emphasized that the lack of respect and support, combined with doubts about his talent after his cancer battle and recovery, made continuing painful. He felt mentally and physically exhausted, and retiring brought him peace. This revelation comes years after his exit, highlighting the emotional challenges even legends face in their final phase.
