Recent developments highlight urgency. On March 4, 2025, Johal was acquitted in one of nine cases in Punjab, with the court rejecting the evidence—primarily a torture-induced confession—as baseless. This acquittal weakens the remaining eight federal cases, which rely on similar evidence. Over 100 UK MPs and peers, led by Johal’s MP Douglas McAllister, have urged Foreign Secretary David Lammy to act swiftly, emphasizing a “window of opportunity” to secure his release. Johal’s brother, Gurpreet, has criticized the UK government’s response as insufficient, noting Lammy’s offer to meet in May 2025 lacks urgency, especially as Johal faces solitary confinement and “mental torture.”
The UK government has raised Johal’s case with Indian authorities, including during Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s talks with Narendra Modi at the 2023 G20 summit and Lammy’s discussions with India’s External Affairs Minister on March 5, 2025.
