Marketed as a revolutionary no-code/low-code solution, the company claimed its virtual assistant “Natasha” autonomously built apps, raising over $450 million from investors like Microsoft and the Qatar Investment Authority, with a peak valuation of $1.5 billion.

A Bloomberg investigation in May 2025 exposed the deception: instead of AI, human coders manually fulfilled customer requests, with the company downplaying this labor to hype its tech. Financial misconduct compounded the issue—Builder.ai allegedly engaged in “round-tripping” with VerSe Innovation, exchanging $60 million in reciprocal invoices from 2021 to 2024 to inflate revenue, per reports. Revenue projections for 2024 were also overstated by 300% ($220 million claimed vs. $50 million actual), leading to a default on a $50 million Viola Credit loan. The lender seized $37 million in May 2025.
Facing insurmountable financial strain, Builder.ai filed for insolvency in June 2025, triggering layoffs and an audit. New York prosecutors launched a probe into financial records and customer dealings. Founder Duggal resigned as CEO in February 2025, moving to Dubai, with Manpreet Ratia taking over. The scandal has fueled scrutiny of “AI washing” in the tech sector. Stankevicius Group has shown interest in acquiring Builder.ai’s assets, like its domain and client database, for a potential revival.
