What a lot of people don’t realize is this : The Sikh community is not running from this tragedy, it is standing in front of it. An organization (SFJ) has just stepped up with a $100,000 donation directly for the families of the victims of the horrific Florida Turnpike crash. That money will be hand-delivered to the Governor’s office with one message: our compassion and solidarity are with the grieving families.
At the same time, let’s be clear: This was a tragic misjudgment, not some malicious or intentional act. The driver himself broke open the truck, held the hand of one of the victims, and pleaded “help is on the way, please stay with me.” That’s not the behavior of a killer, that’s a man in anguish, living with the weight of a mistake.
The community’s donation is about living up to the Sikh principle of seva: showing up for victims with compassion and aid. Sikhs have always been known for this – feeding the hungry, helping in disasters, serving humanity without discrimination. This is consistent with that tradition.
Those asking how he got from Florida to California should direct that question to law enforcement. By his account, highway patrol never told him to stay, his employer instructed him to move the truck and with a pending asylum application he was authorized to work and travel. That’s a procedural gap, not evidence of him “fleeing.”
So while the courts will do their job, the Sikh community has shown its character. We mourn with the families, we extend a hand in compassion, and we reject any attempt to turn this into a political circus. This is about humanity, not hate.
