ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਵਿਚ 30 ਜੂਨ ਨੂੰ ਫਿਲਾਡੇਲਫੀਆ ਤੋਂ ਮਿਆਮੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਫਰੰਟੀਅਰ ਏਅਰਲਾਈਨਜ਼ (Frontier Airlines) ਦੀ ਉਡਾਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਸਾਥੀ ਮੁਸਾਫ਼ਰ ਉਤੇ ਕਥਿਤ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਹਮਲਾ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਵਿਚ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਮੂਲ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ 21 ਸਾਲਾ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਗ੍ਰਿਫ਼ਤਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।

ਇਵਾਨਜ਼, ਜੋ ਸ਼ਰਮਾ ਦੇ ਐਨ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਬੈਠਾ ਸੀ, ਨੇ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਹਮਲਾ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਭੜਕਾਹਟ ਦੇ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਉਸਨੇ ਦਾਅਵਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਸ਼ਰਮਾ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਧਮਕਾਉਣਾ ਤੇ ਭੰਡਣਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ, “ਤੂੰ ਘਟੀਆ ਆਦਮੀ ਹੈ। ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਪੰਗਾ ਲਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਮੌਤ ਅੱਜ ਪੱਕੀ ਹੈ।”
ਇਵਾਨਜ਼ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਫਲਾਈਟ ਅਟੈਂਡੈਂਟਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਚੇਤ ਕਰਕੇ ਅਤੇ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਬਟਨ ਦਬਾ ਕੇ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ। ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ, ਉਸਨੇ ਦੋਸ਼ ਲਗਾਇਆ ਕਿ ਸ਼ਰਮਾ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗਲ਼ੇ ਤੋਂ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਟਕਰਾਅ ਨੂੰ ਵਧਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਇਵਾਨਜ਼ ਨੇ 7ਨਿਊਜ਼ ਨਾਲ ਇੱਕ ਇੰਟਰਵਿਊ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਅਚਾਨਕ ਉਸਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗਲੇ ਤੋਂ ਫੜ ਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਗਲਾ ਘੁੱਟਣਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ।” ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਕੋਲ ਆਪਣਾ ਬਚਾਅ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ ਕੋਈ ਚਾਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ।”
ਹੋਰ ਮੁਸਾਫ਼ਰਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸਾਂਝੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਵੀਡੀਓ ਫੁਟੇਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੋ ਆਦਮੀ ਇੱਕ ਦੂਜੇ ਨਾਲ ਜੂਝਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਦਿਖਾਈ ਦੇ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਜਦੋਂ ਦੂਜੇ ਮੁਸਾਫ਼ਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਫਲਾਈਟ ਦੇ ਅਮਲੇ ਨੇ ਲੜਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਖਤਮ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਦਖਲ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਸ਼ਰਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਆਮੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਤਰਨ ‘ਤੇ ਹਿਰਾਸਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੈ ਲਿਆ ਗਿਆ। ਮੰਗਲਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਅਦਾਲਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੇਸ਼ੀ ਦੌਰਾਨ, ਸ਼ਰਮਾ ਦੇ ਵਕੀਲ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਘਟਨਾ ਇੱਕ ਗਲਤਫਹਿਮੀ ਕਾਰਨ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸਦਾ ਮੁਵੱਕਿਲ ਧਿਆਨ (meditation) ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ, ਜੋ ਕਿ ਉਸਦੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਬੰਧਤ ਇੱਕ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਹੈ।

The victim claimed Sharma approached him and grabbed his neck without provocation while returning to his seat, leading to a physical altercation captured on video by other passengers. Sharma sustained a visible laceration above his left eyebrow, requiring medical attention, while the victim suffered minor scratches and declined treatment. Sharma’s defense attorney argued in court that he was meditating, and the passenger behind him took issue with it, though this claim was met with skepticism by the judge, who set a $500 bond and issued a no-contact order with the victim. Some reports and passenger accounts suggest prior verbal exchanges or derogatory comments may have preceded the incident, though the exact motive remains unclear.
