Punjabi singer Mankirt Aulakh visited the family of Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, a 26-year-old Indian Navy officer who was tragically killed in a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, 2025. The attack, one of the deadliest in the region since the 2019 Pulwama incident, claimed 26 lives, including Narwal and an Indian Air Force airman, Corporal Tage Hailyang. Narwal, a native of Karnal, Haryana, was on his honeymoon with his wife, Himanshi, having married just days earlier on April 16, 2025. The couple had planned to visit Switzerland but opted for Pahalgam after their visa was rejected.
Mankirt Aulakh, known for his contributions to Punjabi music, visited the Narwal family in Karnal to express his condolences and share in their grief. He described the loss as not only a tragedy for the family but for the entire nation, emphasizing Narwal’s bravery and sacrifice. Aulakh’s visit was widely covered on social media and news platforms, with many praising his gesture of solidarity. The singer’s presence provided emotional support to the family, who are grappling with the sudden loss of a young officer described as courageous and dedicated by both his family and the Indian Navy.
The Pahalgam attack occurred in the scenic Baisaran meadows, where terrorists opened fire on tourists. Narwal was among those killed instantly, and his wife, Himanshi, was left devastated. A poignant image of her sitting beside his body at the attack site moved the nation. Narwal’s last rites were performed with full military honors in Karnal on April 23, 2025, attended by dignitaries including Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 50 lakh and a government job for a family member. The Indian Navy, through Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, expressed deep sorrow, calling the attack a “dastardly” act.
Aulakh’s visit came amidst widespread tributes, including candle marches, shop closures in Karnal, and a march by 40 students from Sonipat’s SRM University, who brought a hand-drawn portrait of Narwal to honor him. However, the aftermath also saw misinformation, with a viral video falsely claimed to depict Narwal and Himanshi dancing before the attack. Narwal’s sister, Srishti, a UPSC aspirant, urged the public to refrain from spreading such fake content, a plea echoed by the real couple in the video, Ashish Sehrawat and Yashika Sharma.
